The Story Behind Lee Middleton Dolls

Lee Middleton began sculpting porcelain baby dolls at her kitchen table in Coolville, Ohio in 1978. Dissatisfied with the unrealistic dolls available at the time, she set out to make something different — figures that looked and felt like actual infants.

By 1980, demand had outgrown her home setup. The company moved into a former bank building, then kept expanding. In 1984, production shifted from porcelain to vinyl, making the dolls more affordable and durable without losing their lifelike character.

Lee passed away in 1997, but her legacy continued. Artists including Canadian sculptor Reva Schick carried the work forward, and the company — now known as the Middleton Doll Company — kept producing the realistic baby dolls collectors recognize today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Lee Middleton dolls — value, care, authenticity, sizing, and where to find specific editions.

Are Lee Middleton dolls worth anything?

Value depends on the edition, condition, and whether the original packaging and small Bible are included. Rare vintage Lee Middleton dolls from the early 1980s and limited runs from the 1990s tend to command the highest prices among collectors.

What are the most valuable Lee Middleton dolls?

The most valuable Lee Middleton dolls are generally the earliest porcelain pieces from the late 1970s and early 1980s, along with limited Reva Schick editions and dolls in original condition with all original accessories and packaging intact.

Do they still make Lee Middleton dolls?

Yes. After founder Lee Middleton passed away in 1997, production continued under the Middleton Doll Company. New artists, including Reva Schick, kept the realistic baby doll line going, and collectors can still purchase both new releases and vintage editions.

Who is Reva Schick?

Reva Schick is a Canadian doll artist who joined Lee Middleton Original Dolls in 1997 following the founder’s death. Her designs continued the brand’s signature realistic approach, and dolls attributed to her are now sought-after collectibles in their own right.

How can I tell if a Lee Middleton doll is authentic?

Authentic Lee Middleton dolls carry the brand name stamped or labeled on the doll or its packaging, often alongside the sculptor’s name. Original dolls from the 1980s and 1990s also typically came with a small Bible. Certificates of authenticity were included with some limited editions.

What sizes do Lee Middleton dolls come in?

Lee Middleton dolls are generally sized to approximate real newborn and infant proportions, typically ranging from around 17 to 23 inches. Newborn versions are weighted to feel similar in the arms to an actual baby, which is a key part of their realistic appeal.

What Collectors Are Saying

Real feedback from collectors and parents who’ve added Lee Middleton dolls to their homes and shelves.

Woman in a field

The newborn I ordered looks incredibly real. Weight feels right, facial features are detailed. I’ve collected for years and this holds its own with much pricier pieces.

Patricia M.

Brunette woman outdoor portrait

Bought the African American version as a gift. Arrived well-packaged, true to the photos. The vinyl is smooth and the face is beautifully done. Very pleased.

Sandra K.

Smiling woman in office

Got a vintage 1994 edition and it’s in perfect condition. The realistic detail is still impressive decades later. Worth every cent for any serious collector.
